The Fine Art of Dealing with Journalists (media training)
This communication skills course is delivered from both sides of the fence: a very experienced journalist (TV, broadsheet, tabloid, magazines and online journals on news and features) and a business coach who has made numerous appearances on TV (BBC Breakfast, consumer and documentary programmes) and in the trade and national press. The course can be tailored to the needs of the group, but we would aim to cover the following areas:
- The media environment: press, TV, radio, the Internet, wire services & agencies
- What journalists want from an interview
- Being clear about your objectives and intent
- Belief and Behaviour change
- Prepare, prepare, prepare
- Generating interest in your message: creative hooks
- Being flexible: having games plans and being in the moment
- Clarifying your message
- Getting into the right mindset: emotional vs practical intents
- Sounding right: vocal coaching
- How to look right: body language
- Reframing the issue
- Handling questions
- Handling aggression
- Damage limitation
Role playing is a big part of this course with set piece interviews, unscripted surprise phone calls and doorstep ambushes by journalists. Interviews are filmed and recorded for playback and analysis.
